For several decades, universities in the US and across the globe have increased investments in interdisciplinary research and education, often with the goal of directing the talents of their faculty and students toward addressing our most pressing societal problems. Drawing on his experience as Vice Provost for Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke University, historian Edward Balleisen will place this trend in historical context, consider its advantages and pitfalls, and suggest some key principles for decision-making in the years ahead.

Matthew F. Delmont, Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of History and incoming Frank J. Guarini Associate Dean for International Studies and Interdisciplinary Programs at Dartmouth will moderate the discussion.
