Kidnapped walking home from school, 14-year-old Hirut (Tizita Hagere) steals a rifle and kills her attacker while trying to escape, pitting herself against Ethiopia’s long tradition of marriage by abduction. The only one standing between her and the death penalty is Meaza Ashenafi, a tenacious lawyer who risks everything to prove Hirut acted in self-defense. Ethiopia’s Academy Award entry for 2014, Difret portrays a country’s complex transformation toward equal rights with panoramic beauty. D: Zeresenay Mehari, Ethiopia, subtitled, 2014, 99m
